The Somany Group was established in the year 1984 by Ashok Somany. The Kund Multicolor Slate quarries was the first venture of the group. The quarrying operations in the Kund Multicolor Slate Quarries was the first of its kind in the private sector and located adjacent to the Government run quarries. Under the leadership of Mr. Ashok Somany, the quarrying operations for Kund Multicolor Slate witnessed a phenomenal growth. Today, the Somany Group has also acquired the Government owned quarries after returning as the successful bidders to lease the entire area offered by the government.
The Somany Group has grown into a vast network entities and ventures mainly for building and construction supplies. The group consists of entiities owned exclusively by members of the Somany Family as well as ventures with their associates. These entities are engaged in quarrying, stone processing and export activities. Somany Impex, Kund and Crossland Industries, Jaipur are the natural stone processing and export ventures of the Somany Group. Both these units are owned by Aakash Somany. The group also owns a number of ancillary units all over India to support its natural stone processing interests.
Quarrying of Dimensional Stones and exports of Building and Construction supplies is the main business of the Somany Group since 1984. In the late 1960s the quarrying operations of Kund Multicolor Slate was nationalised by the incumbent Government in Haryana State. the Ashok Somany family was owning extensive areas of land for quarrying the popular Multicolor Slate. However, due to the nationalisation of quarries, the operations were under litigation. In the year 1984, the Supreme Court allowed Ashok Somany to operate the areas under his possession. This was the only quarrying operation in the Private Sector.
The quarrying operations of the Somany Group witnessed a phenomenal growth. In the year 2002, the Somany Group returned as the highest bidder to operate the Haryana Government Owned Kund Multicolor Slate Quarries. In August 2009, the Somany Group, through its entity Balaji Enterprises once again returned as the highest bidder for these quarrying operations.
Besides quarrying, the Somany Group owns family run entities for exports of processed natural stones. The main entities are:-
- Somany Impex: Somany Impex is owned by Aakash Somany, son of Ashok Somany. Somany Impex a modern processing unit located at Kund that processes all types of natural stones used by the building and construction industry. The main thrust of this concern is on exports to large supply chains in major international markets.
- Crossland Industries: Crossland Industries is a 100% Export Oriented Unit located at Vishwakarma Industrial Estate, Jaipur. This was initially a joint venture with Aakash Somany and other associates of the Somany Group. Since the year 2002, Aakash Somany has taken over the unit under exclusive control of the Somany Group. Crossland industries owns a modern factory for processing sandstones quarried in Rasjasthan state and nearby areas.
- Somany Natural Stones Pvt. Ltd.: Stone Processing Unit located at Rewari, Haryana. the main activity is sawing of dimensional stone blocks and processing of natural stone products for building and construction supplies. This company caters to clients in the international as well as domestic markets including other exporters of stone products from India.
Besides these entities, the group owns a number of supporting ancillary units strategically located near quarries in other States to complement the activities of these entities.
The Somany Group has also diversified into the field of education.The main educational institutes under management of the Somany Group are:-
- The Somany Vidhyapeeth School, Masani: A residential cum day school affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education for offering primary, secondary and higher secondary education
- Somany Institute of Management and Engineering, Rewari: A post graduate college offering Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Computers and Management.
In addition to these major institutions, the group has also set up commercial training centres for Information Technology and Multimedia Animation at Rewari, Haryana.
